For pioneer of Post Modernism George Sowden, the logic and possibilities of production are as decisive as aesthetics.
Born in Leeds, Sowden left the UK for Milan in 1970. Drawn to more radical design after an award-winning decade of work with icons such as Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti, he co- founded Memphis. The non-conformist movement formed by this avant-garde group of Milan-based creatives defined the 80’s. That same year Sowden also launched his own studio, SowdenDesign.
Sowden’s ongoing, broad-spectrum of fascinations, from hand-printed pattern to emergent technologies, ensure his designs remain innovative yet elementary. Founding his homeware brand, SOWDEN, in 2010, he still works out of Milan - collaborating with global brands, such as HAY, whilst maintaining his personal interest in craft and small industries.
